Celebrating the achievements of MVCC alumni

During an event on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026, the Mohawk Valley Community College Foundation honored the recipients of the 2026 Alumni of Merit Award, Distinguished Alumni Award, and Young Alumni Award.

Nicholas Mayhew

2026 Alumni of Merit Award

Image of person in suit, smilingNicholas Mayhew ’81 was announced as the recipient of the 2026 MVCC Alumni of Merit Award, presented annually to a nominee who has contributed to the improvement of the community, helped the College, and otherwise demonstrated professional leadership that symbolizes MVCC’s mission of student success and community involvement.

Mayhew, a graduate of MVCC’s Accounting program, has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of GPO Federal Credit Union since 2014, providing leadership and direction for the organization, including strategic planning, financial performance, regulatory compliance, and daily operations. As CEO, he has led GPO through steady, responsible growth, increasing assets from approximately $200 million to more than $600 million while maintaining a strong focus on financial strength, regulatory soundness, and a service-driven culture for employees, members, and the communities GPO serves. His relationship with GPO spans more than 25 years. Before becoming CEO, he served in multiple volunteer leadership roles, including as a Board member beginning in 1991, Vice Chair from 2004-2014, Chairman of the Supervisory Committee, and a member of key committees focused on personnel and asset/liability management.

Mayhew’s commitment to service extends beyond his professional role through decades of community and industry involvement. He has served on numerous boards and committees supporting healthcare, economic development, youth programs, and nonprofit organizations throughout the Mohawk Valley. He currently serves as Secretary, Board member, and Executive Committee member of The House of the Good Shepherd. At the state level, he is actively involved with the New York Credit Union Association, where he serves as Secretary, Board member, and Executive Committee member.

In addition to his associate degree from MVCC, Mayhew holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Utica College of Syracuse University and a master’s degree in Management and Urban Policy from The New School in New York City. 

Tressa LaBella

2026 Distinguished Alumni Award

Image of person smilingTressa LaBella, a four-time MVCC graduate, received the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award, presented annually to a nominee who graduated at least 10 years ago and has made significant contributions to or achievements in their industry or demonstrated a commitment to MVCC’s values throughout their life and career.

LaBella, Utica Fire Department Lieutenant and a part-time Registered Nurse for I-CAN, has continually embodied MVCC’s values through a career that reflects exceptional service, leadership, and lifelong learning. Since joining the Utica Fire Department in 2015, she has made history as its first female fire lieutenant, while continually advancing her education and professional skills. Her degrees include associate degrees in Media Marketing and Management, Fire Protection Technology, Emergency Medical Services/Paramedic, and Nursing from MVCC; a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Polytechnic Institute; and a master’s degree from Stony Brook University. She became a registered nurse while working full-time as a firefighter.

Rooted in a family legacy of public service, LaBella has forged her own path through dedication, hard work, and a deep commitment to helping others. Her promotion to Lieutenant represents both personal achievement and progress for women in public safety. 

Nazaria D. DeLoach

2026 Young Alumni Award

DeLoach ’20, owner and operator of Dreamer Studios, received the 2026 MVCC Young Alumni Award, presented annually to a nominee who graduated within the last 10 years, has emerged as an early leader in their professional career and community, and demonstrates a commitment to MVCC’s values.

DeLoach is a graduate of MVCC’s Business Administration program and a rising entrepreneur in the Mohawk Valley. After initially enrolling in 2016 and stepping away to gain life and creative experience, he returned to complete his degree with a clearer sense of purpose. While at MVCC, he worked with campus mentors at thINCubator to develop and launch his business idea. In 2023 he opened Dreamer Studios on Genesee Street in Utica, creating both a successful business and a valuable community resource that supports the region’s creative economy. DeLoach credits MVCC with giving him the structure, guidance, and confidence needed to turn his passion into a viable business.
