This spring, Mohawk Valley Community College’s Lambda Beta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, along with several members of the chapter leadership team, earned awards and accolades at the PTK International and New York Regional Conventions.
At the international convention in April, MVCC’s Lambda Beta Chapter was named to the Top 100 Chapters out of 1,300 across the globe. Dr. Lew Kahler, MVCC Vice President of Learning and Academic Affairs, was one of 22 college administrators to receive the Distinguished College Administrator Award.
At the PTK New York Regional Convention in March, two MVCC students were named to the All-New York Academic Team:
- Yuzune Naruse is an international student from Japan who came to New York to pursue an education in international relations. During her time at MVCC, Naruse has excelled academically, receiving multiple scholarships, including the Student Leadership Award, Jeremy Merry Resident Assistant Memorial Scholarship, and the Friedberg-Grossman Scholarship. She also was active on campus, serving as Student Congress President, Resident Assistant, and Strengths Ambassador. Naruse plans to attain a master’s degree with the goal of contributing to international development efforts to alleviate poverty and hunger in developing African countries at the United Nations.
- Scarlett O’Grady, a Business Administration major from Westmoreland, N.Y., is currently working toward her bachelor’s degree in international business at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In addition to excelling in her studies at MVCC, O’Grady was involved on campus as a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the College’s Student Leadership Academy.
MVCC’s Lambda Beta Chapter of PTK received the following awards at the New York Regional Convention:
- Five Star Chapter Award: This is the 13th consecutive year that MVCC’s Lambda Beta Chapter of PTK has earned five-star status, the highest level of achievement a chapter can attain through participation in campus, local, regional, national, and international activities.
- Distinguished Chapter Member Award for the New York Region: Ash Paul of Ava, N.Y., second place
- Paragon Award for New Advisors for the New York Region: MVCC Assistant Professor Dr. Lorin Williams, PTK Advisor, second place
- New York Region Community Service Award: Second place
- Honors in Action Theme Award: Second place for the theme “Nostalgia as Play”
- Distinguished Honors in Action Award: Third place
- Distinguished College Project Award: Fifth place
- Most Distinguished Chapter Award: Fourth place
- New York Region Edgiest Chapter Award: Second place
