Mohawk Valley Community College will host several events in celebration of Women’s History Month this March.

Vida Tamoshunas, director of Data and Analytics with Preferred Mutual Insurance Company, will present a lecture on “Women in STEM” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, in Wilcox Hall room 225 at MVCC’s Utica Campus. Tamoshunas will talk about her own journey as a woman in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Tamoshunas earned an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and a master’s in business. Her interests in math and logic have led her to a career in which she engages with others to solve problems and educate people on how data and analysis can be leveraged to make better decisions. Tamoshunas also will share advice for women looking to find careers in historically male-dominated fields.

The documentary, “Picture a Scientist,” which chronicles the groundswell of researchers writing a new chapter for female scientists, will be shown at 5 p.m. Monday, March 21, in Alumni College Center room 116 at MVCC’s Utica Campus. In the film, biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, they encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

A Women’s History Month Luncheon featuring guest speakers from diverse backgrounds, will be held at noon Wednesday, March 23, in the Alumni College Center Snack Bar at MVCC’s Utica Campus. The cost to attend the luncheon is $5 for the general public, $2 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.

The movie “Harriet” will be shown as part of the Fact and Film Series at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in Schafer Theater, Wilcox Hall, at MVCC’s Utica Campus. Dr. Todd Marshall, MVCC Chief Equity & Inclusion Officer/CDO, will provide an introduction to the film, which tells the story of heroic abolitionist Harriet Tubman, whose courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history. The cost to attend is $5 for the general public, $2 for MVCC employees, and free for MVCC students.
