Mohawk Valley Community College has appointed Gabrielle Coffey of Utica as Women’s Basketball Head Coach/Athletic Specialist, responsible for recruiting and coaching student-athletes for the Hawks’ highly competitive intercollegiate basketball program, part of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III, Division III. She also will help to guide players in accomplishing their academic and athletic goals.
Coffey has many years of experience working with and supporting students in their academic and athletic pursuits. Most recently, she was the Director of School Counseling and the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at Notre Dame Schools in Utica. Coffey was the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Herkimer County Community College from 2017-20, leading the team to the Regional Semi-Finals and earning them a Top 10 national ranking for the 2019-20 season. Prior to her time at Herkimer, she was Assistant Coach (2013-14) and Head Coach (2014-16) at Finger Lakes Community College, where she also worked as a specialist in the Disability Services and Academic Advisement departments. Coffey also has served as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at the University of Rochester (2012-13) and the Head Coach for Hudson Valley Community College (2009-11). At HVCC, she was named Mountain Valley Coach of the Year (2009-10) and Region III Coach of the Year (2010-11).
Coffey played collegiate basketball at both Siena College (2002-03) and SUNY Oneonta (2003-06). While playing for Oneonta, she was team captain for 2005-06, was named to the SUNY All-Conference Team for 2005-06, and was named the ECAC Championship and Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2006. She also earned the SUNY Oneonta Athletics Single Most Outstanding Performance Award in 2006.
Coffey earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from SUNY Oneonta, a master’s degree in sport and exercise psychology from Ithaca College, and a master’s degree/certificate of advanced study in school counseling from SUNY Albany.
