Career Development Needs of Low Income and First-Generation Students
Presenter(s): Yue Riesbeck & Liz Doherty
Low income and first generation students face unique challenges in preparing for their
careers while in college. These students realize there is a better life within reach
and feel the gateway to this improved life is obtaining the degree, but aren’t always
clear on exactly how to get there. They can possess unrealistic career goals, or make
career goals without understanding the aspirations associated with their decision.
Additionally, their professional network is often nonexistent, and they often have
no realization of its importance. The good news is that most of what these students
might be lacking in terms of informed career decisions, a professional network, and
cultural capital we can help them gain through thoughtful advising and intentional
career programming. Join us for a conversation about what can make a difference for
these students and how we can infuse more of that at MVCC. NOTE: THIS SESSION WILL
BE RECORDED.

Roundtable Discussion: After the Pandemic: What Will Teaching Look Like in the "After
Times"?
Christine Miller & Todd Marshall
This workshop will be a roundtable discussion of how our teaching and classrooms may
look different as we reflect upon the experiences from this past year in a remote
modality. What parts of the experience work surprisingly well? What are new best practices
that we will bring back to the face to face classroom? How has this experience changed
our vision of our own classroom and education at large as we move forward? How do
these experiences connect to Guided Pathways and the college’s commitment to improving
equity and inclusion in our classrooms? These questions and others will be considered
as participants collectively share their personal "takeaways". Thoughts and ideas
will be captured to inform the larger conversation of how the College may evolve as
we come to the other side of the Pandemic.
