The First Day of Class
It is very important that you attend the first day of class. You will meet your professor, who will outline the course and present the requirements of the class. Some professors may use the first day for introductions, and others may start utilizing course material that day. Either way, it is important that you are there to gather that information.
- Don't worry about getting lost!
- What to bring:
- Something to write with
- A notebook of some kind
- Your textbook (if you've bought it already)
- Your class schedule
- Hold on to your syllabus.
For the first week of classes, college staff in the Student Services Center (1st floor of Payne Hall in Utica or A30 in Plumley Complex in Rome) will be available to point you in the right direction of your classes and answer any questions you may have.
A syllabus is essentially a "contract" between you and your professor on what is expected from you, and how you will be evaluated. Don't let a "short" syllabus disillusion you - it doesn't outline the many hours that must be spent in between tests and papers in order to do well. Students are also encouraged to save their transcripts each semester as you may need to prove course content when transferring.
The first day of class is not too early to start studying. Manage your time wisely; final exams will be here before you know it.
