What Should I Expect at MVCC?
In most cases, students experience greater success when they know what to expect. Expect to find the following:
- Class sizes that vary
While most classes are less than 30, class sizes will vary depending on the location and the course. (The largest classes are often required courses.)
- Student's need for personal responsibility
- More emphasis on tests and less on homework
It is your responsibility to attend class and complete assignments. No one will monitor your progress. No one will be checking up on you. You are expected to be responsible for your own academic progress. Enjoy the freedom and use it well!
Your instructors may give homework assignments that are often never graded or checked. Students who want to receive good grades will do the assignments anyway; they know that they will be quizzed or tested on the material at some point.
- Critical Thinking Skills
- Class time versus independent study time
- Low grades come with consequences
- People who care for you & your success
You will be expected to learn and understand what you read. You will be asked to draw conclusions, form opinions, and evaluate the ideas of others.
Professors and instructors will present material in class via lecture; however, you are expected to do much of your learning on your own. The general rule is: For every hour you spend in class, you should spend one or two hours out of class – reading, studying, and completing assignments.
MVCC has academic standards that students must meet in order to stay enrolled and receive financial aid. Students who fall below a 2.0 overall grade point average (GPA) and don’t pass at least two-thirds of their classes are in danger of losing their financial aid eligibility. Additionally, some majors have higher standards than that, and all MVCC students must have a 2.0 GPA to graduate.
As your look around your campus, you will find that the faculty, college staff, and administrators are here to make your journey a fulfilling one. We value you as an individual and are here to assist you in furthering your academic and personal achievement.
