Statement from the MVCC Financial Aid Office
Although MVCC provides a comparison of lenders, we do not encourage student to choose a particular lender. Our goal is to provide our student with general information so they may familiarize themselves with the process and make the choice of lender that will best suit their needs.
There are dozens of banks and student loan companies offering hundreds of different products, features, benefits, and incentives. We realize that many students and parents do not have the time, knowledge or resources to research all available options. We also know there are many lending companies advertising while not providing the full picture, or side by side comparisons.
MVCC suggests lenders that are proven in our industry to provide a high quality of service and products to our students and their families. They provide our office with detailed information about their products and services, and we, therefore, are able to provide you with comparisons of interest rates, fees, features, and benefits. These can be found on our “Select Your Lender” site. More detailed information can be obtained through our office, or by contacting the lender directly.
While we do suggest lenders, this in no way means you, as the borrower must choose one of them. The “Select You Lender” page lists the suggested lenders, as well as a category of “Other”. This will bring you to a drop down box, which lists all banks and lenders who provide student loan funding. They are listed alphabetically for your convenience. If you would like additional information on a lender we do not provide a comparison for, please contact our office, and we will research the information for you.
How to Complete Your Student Loan Online
A FAFSA must be filed each academic year at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You must have a Federal PIN in order to electronically sign your FAFSA. If you have not yet applied for your PIN, go to www.pin.ed.gov and click on “APPLY FOR A PIN. Follow the instructions and provide your email address so that the PIN is delivered electronically. If you are a dependent student, please also have a parent apply for a PIN.
Before you complete your online student loan process, you must accept the dollar amount of your award that you would like to borrow this year. You can use Information & Registration SIRs login to accept your award. You will need your STUDENT ID & PIN to login. If you don’t have a PIN, go to www.mvcc.edu/crsereg/.
All students receiving federal loans (Subsidized, Unsubsidized Stafford Loans or Perkins Loan) are required to complete online entrance counseling prior to disbursement. Go to Online Entrance Counseling interview to begin the process.
Go to www.SelectYourLender.com/mvcc and choose a lender for your loan. We recommend these lenders based on the quality of products and services they provide to Mohawk Valley Community College’s students and families. Although you may select any lender you wish, we encourage you to choose from this list to ensure that you receive excellent benefits and fast processing of your loan funds.
Upon clicking on the APPLY NOW button of the lender of your choice, you will be directed to the HESC E-MPN website. In order to complete the electronic Stafford Loan process with HESC, you will need a driver’s license number (if you have one), two references and a HescPIN user ID and password, issued by HESC. If you do not have a HescPIN, you will need to register for one. A link to the HescPIN registration will be provided on the Borrower Authentication page. After receiving your HescPIN, follow the prompts to complete your E-MPN.
All students receiving student loans must have verification of attendance completed before loan proceeds are delivered.
All student borrowers are required to have exit counseling prior to graduation or dropping below half-time enrollment.
Financial aid awards are not automatically renewed; you must apply each academic year. Renewal of MVCC Presidential Scholarships requires maintenance of a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).
Parent (Plus) Loan
Parents are eligible to borrow through the student loan program, if the financial aid package does not cover all expenses. PLUS Loan borrowers must:
- Be the natural or adoptive parent of an eligible dependent, undergraduate student.
- Have an approved credit rating.
Payment on PLUS Loans may begin 60 days after the final disbursement of the loan for the academic year, or may be deferred until 6 months after the student graduates, or falls below 1/2 time status. With either option, interest begins to accrue on the loan after the first disbursement of the academic year. A fee of up to 4% may apply on this loan, and the interest rate is variable. Rates are adjusted annually on July 1st.
