Frequently Asked Questions
A. At MVCC we have a career counselor on staff that would be able to sit down with you and explore the many programs available to you. Just give Janet Visalli a call at 792.5535 or e-mail jvisalli@mvcc.edu.
A. Believe it or not MVCC's student body is currently made up of 36% returning adult students and that number is growing each semester. You would be surprised to find many other adults have returned to school to begin second careers.
A. You have to remember that high school was a very different environment and you probably viewed school very differently than you do today. Typically adult students do better in college than they ever did in high school. First of all, you have been out there in the real world and are aware of what employers are looking for - individuals who return to school for second careers often end up being on our President and Vice-President's Lists.
A. Math is a common fear for many students, not only returning adults, and we have resources on campus that will assist you in tackling your math fears. Our Learning Center has both professional and peer tutors available (at not cost to you) to help. Most of our returning adult students will take a non-credit math course that will bring you up to the college level math courses required. Also, depending upon the program of study you choose a math requirement may not be needed.
A. While no one can guarantee job placement after graduation, we work closely with the Working Solutions Offices and are aware of their current Demand Occupation List. We can assist you with matching the demand occupations with training programs available at MVCC.
A. Yes. We have the following 1 year (or less) certificate programs that offer hands on training:
- CNC Machinist Technology Certificate
- Machinist Technology Certificate
- Carpentry & Masonry Certificate (Rome Campus)
- Welding Certificate
In addition, we have non-credit courses through the Center for Community & Economic Development such as Tractor Trailer Driver, A+ Certification, Phlebotomy and Security Guard Training to name a few.
A. Financial Aid (such as TAP and Pell) is available to those who qualify and is easily accessible through www.fafsa.gov.edu. Once you are attending there may be other scholarships you may be eligible to apply for. If you are unable to secure employment without re-training, there may be funds available from the Working Solutions Office. However, this is determined on an individual by individual basis and there are many stipulations that apply. Please feel free to contact Janet Visalli at 315.792.5535 or e-mail jvisalli@mvcc.edu for further information.
