Residence Life Philosophy
The Residence Life Office administers the residence hall program which attempts to round out the education of the student beyond the classroom experience by providing an atmosphere in which students can grow personally, socially and culturally as well as academically. Through the experience of residence hall living, a student is to gain an understanding of people and practice in the process of group living, where the attitudes of cooperation, tolerance, understanding and responsibility are promoted.
There are four residence halls on the Utica Campus housing a total of 360 students. Each hall has three stories with room for approximately 30 students on each floor. The rooms are arranged in "suite style"so that seven or eight students occupy one living area. Most of the rooms accommodate two students, but there are triple rooms available. Recreation areas and lounges are located in each hall. The halls are run by two professional Residence Hall Directors, three Student Directors and 12 Resident Assistants. They each live in the residence hall complex, on-call 24 hours a day. All staff members undergo training in enforcing regulations, security policies, counseling and listening skills.
The Residence Life Office also provides assistance with off-campus housing. Off-campus housing includes apartments, individual homes and individual rooms in private homes. The Residence Life Office maintains updated listings of all available housing and provides an information booklet. Because of liability, the College cannot provide supervision or evaluation of off-campus housing. The College does not certify the accommodations listed on the off-campus housing list.
