911 Excellence in Community Service

Criteria

Student must be in good standing, including part-time students, who have an extensive record of involvement in their community.

Description

This scholarship was established to honor the spirit of volunteerism and community service always evident in our nation but brought into greater prominence by the events of September 11, 2001.

Albert V. Payne Memorial

Criteria

Applicants must be enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 credit hours) in a technical program, including but not limited to Engineering Technology, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Graphic Communication,Data Processing: Programs and Systems, & certain Liberal Arts programs (Mathematics transfer, Chemistry transfer & Physics transfer).Preferential consideration will be given to the student’s performance of volunteer service, either on or off campus.

Description

In memory of Albert V. Payne, the first President of the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences of Utica (later to become MVCC).This scholarship is for students entering their freshman or sophomore year. Scholarships will be applied first to tuition, then to books and fees only.

Alfio Santucci

Criteria

Applicants must be full-time second-year Surveying Technology students attending MVCC with a minimum 2.5 G.P.A.

Description

This fund was established by a generous gift made by Gloria L. Santucci, Alfio’s sister.Throughout Alfio’s 56-year career, he championed the field of land surveying.

Alumni Association

Criteria

Awarded to deserving students who are children, parents, siblings, spouses, grandparents, grandchildren, step-parents or step-siblings of paid MVCC Alumni Association members.Applicants must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Awarded each fall.

Anthony Givens Memorial

Criteria

Student in good academic standing, full or part-time student, enrolled in the Chemical Dependency Counseling Program, non-traditional second year student transferring to a 4-year institution, preference given to recent immigrants.

Description

This award honors the memory of Tony Givens, a kind and generous soul who tamed his demons long enough to dedicate most of his adult life to helping those struggling with drug use.

Anthony Torchia Memorial

Criteria

Applicant needs 2.0 or better G.P.A.; enrolled or intends to enroll in Electrical Engineering, Technology or Electrical Service Technical programs; a Utica resident or graduate from a high school in the City of Utica.Preference will be given to incoming freshmen and to students involved in extracurricular activities.If no qualified 1st year students apply, then 2nd year students will be considered.

Description

In memory of 19-year-old student Anthony Torchia whose life ended prematurely in a tragic car accident on May 6, 2000.The scholarship has been established as a way to preserve Anthony’s memory by providing scholarship assistance to deserving students in the Electrical Engineering curriculum.

Arthur Salvetti Outstanding

Criteria

One or more full-tuition scholarships will be awarded each year to top students in the electrical technology curriculum who will be continuing at MVCC for a second year.

The scholarship is made possible by Arthur Salvetti, an alumnus (Electrical – Class of ’54)

Association of Mohawk Valley Administrators (AMVA)

Criteria

While preference shall be given to sons & daughters of AMVA members, AMVA selection committee may make an award to non-AMVA students based on on academic achievement, college or community involvement and financial need.

Award is given to an incoming freshman or to a continuing senior who is enrolled full-time.

Auxiliary Services Corporation

Criteria

Applicants must be full-time or part-time matriculated students enrolled in a degree or certificate program.Consideration will be given to scholarship and need.Awards will also be based upon applicant's service and participation in one or more of the following areas:1. College Services (Tutoring, College Committees, Special Events)2. Student Services (Student Congress, Clubs, Athletics)3.Community Services (Work with any Service or Religious Organization).

Criteria

This award is given to students in the Surveying Technology Program.

Cecil A. Nellenback in CJ

Criteria

The applicant must be a senior student entering their final term maintaining a G.P.A. of 3.0 or greater.The student must be enrolled full-time, taking a minimum of 12 credit hours.Preference will be given to students who are community oriented and to students transferring to a 4-year school and majoring in Forensic Investigation.

Description

This scholarship will be awarded to a current student who best exemplifies the ideals and qualities of Cecil A. Nellenbeck whose untimely and tragic death is mourned by family and friends.

Charles E. Schmidt Memorial

Criteria

Applicants must be from Oneida County (Utica area preferred) enrolled in one of MVCC/s business-related programs.Recommended students must show financial need and have good academic standing.Extra consideration to former high school Kiwanis “Key Club” students.

Description

Award in memory of former MVCC Business Management Department Professor Charles E. Schmidt, is made annually by the Utica Kiwanis Club.

Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU)

Criteria

Student must have at least a 3.0 G.P.A. and must demonstrate financial need.

Description

Sponsored by the Utica Chapter of the Society of CPCU given each term to a financial services major or business program major who express an interest in insurance.

Chemical Dependency Practitioner Program Book Award

Criteria

Student must be completing 1,2,or 3rd semester, must have highest GPA in the CDP program.Award will be given upon the student’s subsequent semester registration.

Description

This award is for students with the highest GPA and who are enrolled in the Chemical Dependency Practitioner Program.

Congressman Donald J.Mitchell Family

Criteria

Applicant must be a full-time MVCC student who is a resident of Oneida, Herkimer, Hamilton, Schoharie and selected townships in Montgomery, Schenectady and Otsego Counties.Applicants must be high school graduates, have academic promise, demonstrate leadership potential, be involved in community affairs and have financial need.

Description

Upon leaving his congressional seat, Mitchell contributed the remainder of his campaign fund balance to the Community Foundation, for the designated purpose of providing scholarships to those attending HCCC and MVCC.

D'Arcangelo & Co. Accounting

Criteria

3.5 G.P.A. minimum. BIT major, preference to Accounting majors, strong work ethic.

Description

Given annually to a second year freshman with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.5 in a BIT program with preference to Accounting majors.May be used for tuition, fees and books only.

David & Virginia Ward

Criteria

Applicants must complete the FAFSA form.Students must have 2.8 G.P.A. during their Freshman year at MVCC, be a resident of New York State, must be enrolled full-time, taking a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester.Eligibility is limited to 2 consecutive semesters of attendance.

David Mathis Minority

Criteria

Recommended students must have good grades, have demonstrated leadership qualities, and have at least a moderate degree of financial need.Recipients must maintain full-time (12 or more credit hours per semester) enrollment at MVCC.

Description

This scholarship was established for the purpose of recruiting and attracting potentially deserving minority students to MVCC.David Mathis is now a trustee of MVCC, has served as VP of the MVCC Foundation, is currently director of Employment & Training for Oneida County.

Douglas J. Bauer Excellence-in-Chemistry

Criteria

Student must have had at least 2 years of college chemistry while maintaining a G.P.A. of at least 3.0.

Description

The award will be presented to a graduating MVCC senior in the Physical Science curriculum.

Dr. Armond J. Festine Memorial

Criteria

Part-time students who have demonstrated superior scholarship in view of extraordinary financial, job, or family responsibilities will be eligible to receive the award.

Description

Dr. Festine was a former Dean of Community Services at MVCC.

Dr. Jim Dyer for Academic Excellence

Criteria

Student must have a minimum of 30 MVCC credits.Credits in the Liberal Arts curriculum only will be used in the calculation.December graduates will be considered among the May graduates.

Edward Juergensen Memorial

Criteria

To be awarded to a graduating student transferring to Syracuse University.Preference will be given to graduating students transferring to the Syracuse University program in illustration.The scholarship will be awarded only after the student provides evidence that they are actually enrolled at Syracuse University.

Provides a scholarship for a student who is continuing their education at Syracuse University.

Edward V. Mele

Criteria

Applicant will be an incoming freshman having recently graduated from high school in good standing or be a first-year MVCC student continuing at MVCC for their second year, also in good academic standing.Candidates must also be residents of Oneida, Herkimer or Madison Counties.

This scholarship is awarded to a student who resides in either Oneida, Herkimer, or Madison County.

Father David G. Looney Memorial

Criteria

Applicants will be accepted as full-time, matriculated students in a degree or certificate program, will be son or daughter of a Utica fire fighter and will exemplify the ideals, qualities and moral character of Father David G. Looney.

Description

Father Looney was chaplain at SUNY IT, the Utica Fire Department, and at the MVCC Newman Center until his passing in 1988.

Faxton Hospital Alumni Assoc.

Criteria

An award or awards will be given annually depending on availability of funds) to a nursing student entering Nursing 201 with a minimum 2.5 G.P.A. each semester who resides in Oneida or Herkimer County.

Description

The alumni association , organized in 1902, established from the contributions and generosity of alumni, continue to support education in the profession of nursing.

Friedberg-Grossman

Criteria

Students must have minimum G.P.A. of 3.2 and have completed at least 30 credit hours.Two letters of recommendation from full-time MVCC faculty along with a one-page essay on the importance of international trade to society and business must be included with application.

This scholarship is awarded to matriculated students in business administration, accounting, financial services major or business management major.

Harold T. Fitzpatrick Memorial

Criteria

Any full-time student, regardless of academic major, who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in at least two (2) mathematics courses taken at MVCC is eligible for this award.One of the courses must be a credit-bearing course, numbered MA 105 or above.In addition to the student's performance in math courses, the following criteria will be considered:1. Demonstrated individual growth,2. Overall scholastic achievement,3. Potential for further achievement,4. Demonstrated financial need

Description

These annual awards are made by the Mathematics Dept in memory of Harold Fitzpatrick, who was a member of the department from 1968 through 1973.

Honorable Leon Marketos Memorial

Criteria

Applicants must have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 and provide a listing of their community service volunteer work.

Description

Award to full-time students in the Human Services and Psychology Department or who are of Greek heritage enrolled in any MVCC academic program.

James J. Nackley Memorial

Criteria

Applicants must have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5, reside in Oneida County and provide evidence of financial need.

Description

Awarded to a full-time student majoring in the financial services management.Should no students in this major apply, students majoring in the business department program will be given consideration.

James O'Looney Photography

Criteria

Must demonstrate academic excellence based on overall GPA & grades in photography courses, by contributions in the photography program, in classes, the studio, in shows & in the labs, by community service through promise as a professional photographer.

Award to a full or part-time matriculated student in the photography program who has either graduated in the Fall term or will be graduating in the Spring term.

Jill A. Korrasik Memorial

Criteria

Awarded annually to a nursing student who has successfully completed Nursing 101, 102 and 103 and is a member of the Student Nurses’ Organization.The winning candidate chosen will be considered most improved, academically and clinically.

In memory of Jill A. Korrasik, 21, who was a second-year nursing student whose life ended tragically as a result of an automobile accident.

Johanna Carleo Memorial

Criteria

Award given to 2nd year student having a 2.5 or higher GPA preparing to work in a medical office (students in the Health Information Tech/Medical Records and Medical Office Tech programs are eligible - licensed nurses are excluded from consideration).

Description

Johanna Carleo was a very active member of the Central New York Association of Medical Assistants (CNYAMA) for many years.Membership is open to students who are entering the medical field, with a $10 yearly special student rate.

John Stratton Memorial

Criteria

Awarded to an outstanding graduate of the Human Services and Psychology Program.

In memory of Professor John Stratton who exemplifies academic excellence and potential for professional integrity in both character and performance.

John Weakley Memorial

Criteria

Students must be nominated by an instructor, and complete the MVCC scholarship application and submit a brief essay (2 pages max) which speaks to their interest in the field of Chemical Dependency & their plans for future education and/or certification.

Description

John Weakley lost his struggle with alcoholism in April 2005. For many years, he had accepted help from professionals in the field of chemical dependency counseling, although he battled the disease, he was unable to overcome his addiction.This scholarship will be available annually to 2nd-yr students who are graduating from MVCC and transferring to a 4-yr institution or pursuing professional certification.

Joseph Asselta Memorial

Academic achievement, financial need, community service and a demonstrated aptitude for a business career.

The family of Eustelle McMillan, led by her husband, John H. McMillan, MVCC Dept. Head/Professor Emeritus, Mechanical and Civil Engineering, has established this scholarship in her memory to celebrate her lifetime of nurturing and caring for others.

Maryann Riggalls Coyne Memorial for Women in Business

Criteria

Traditional full-time students must reside in the Mohawk Valley (Oneida/Herkimer/Madison Counties) and enrolled full-time taking a minimum of 12 credit hours.Must maintain at least a 3.0 G.P.A. during her freshman (first) year at MVCC.Must demonstrate involvement in efforts to better their community and exhibit drive, determination and the entrepreneurial spirit.

Full-time: At least a 3.0 G.P.A., full-time matriculated students enrolled in a hospitality degree program, and have completed at least 2 semesters in the hospitality programs.Part-time: At least a 3.25 or higher G.P.A. and having completed 50 credit hours of study in hospitality at MVCC.Students will have demonstrated community involvement in relation to the hospitality field and demonstrated intra- & extracurricular college commitments related to the advancement of the Hospitality Programs learning environments.Financial need may be considered.

This scholarship was set up in 1993 by Pat in memory of his beloved wife, Fern.Pat passed away in 2004 but his beliefs will live on through this scholarship legacy for many years.

Pauline A. Ryan Memorial

Criteria

Students from accounting, business management, business administration and office technology who have completed a minimum of 15 credit hours and have shown progress toward an academic degree.

Scholarship is given annually in honor of Mrs. Ryan, who formerly headed the Business Department at MVCC.

Prevelere Life Sciences

Criteria

It is preferred that the student selected is a resident of Oneida, Madison or Herkimer County.Students must write a brief essay (2 pages) on their interest in pursuing a career in a scientific field. An interview by a member of the MVCC faculty and a representative from Prevalere will also be required.The student selected must work full-time, paid summer internship at Prevalere after the first year of MVCC.If student accepts scholarship, the student will commit to two (2) years of employment at Prevalere Life Sciences following completion of 2nd yr of college.Scholarship will pay for full tuition costs for first semester of the 2nd year at MVCC, not including books, fees, etc.

Senator James H. Donovan Memorial

Criteria

Awarded to high school graduates or matriculated students residing in Oneida, Herkimer, or Lewis Counties.They are based on academic promise, community involvement, and financial self-help.

Description

This scholarship was established in memory of Senator Donovan who passed away in 1990.He was a New York State Senator and represented Oneida, Herkimer and Lewis Counties from 1966-1990.

Social Science Faculty Staff

Criteria

One award will be made to a parent (child custody is not required), who has completed a minimum of 24 credit hours and has achieved at least a 3.0 G.P.A.A second award will be made to a general Criminal Justice or Public Policy major who ahs completed a minimum of 24 credit hours and has achieved at least a 3.0 G.P.A.

Description

Awards will be presented to any student enrolled in the Social Science, Criminal Justice or Public Policy Program.

Stanley F. Cornish Jr. Memorial

Criteria

The student must also express a curiosity and interest in biology, as well as an interest and success in other academic areas such as language and/or the arts.

Annual award given to a student who shows a high level of academic achievement in general biology for two semesters.

Stephen C. Casakos

Criteria

Student must be entering their last semester with the highest GPA in the business and information technology concentration.

Awarded to a full-time business management, business administration or banking & insurance student.

Students with Disabilities

Criteria

Applicant must be full-time and legally disabled and registered with the MVCC Office for Students with Disabilities, Academic Building 109.The student must maintain at least a 2.0 G.P.A., demonstrate leadership qualities, and have a financial need.

This scholarship, sponsored by the MVCC Students with Disabilities Club, has a goal which is to assist all students with a disability, to extend camaraderie, and to recruit and attract potentially deserving students to MVCC.

Susan Q. Chapin Memorial

Criteria

Applicant must be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours min) and have completed at least 30 credit hours.She must have a minimum 2.5 GPS and must be working to her ability and have demonstrated financial need.

This scholarship was established in memory of Susan Q. Chapin by her parents, Mary & Ed Chapin, to pay tribute to their daughter's short yet accomplished life.

Theodore "Ted" Moore Memorial

Criteria

Matriculated MVCC students have completed a minimum of 30 MVCC credits, and having a G.P.A. of at least 2.3. Matriculated MVCC students have completed a minimum of 30 MVCC credits, and having a G.P.A. of at least 2.3.Nominees must exemplify the qualities and values of Ted Moore.

Description

Associate Professor Moore joined MVCC in the Mathematics Dept. in 1981.In December 1996, he was tragically taken from his family, friends, students, and colleagues through the actions of a drunk driver.

Utica Job Service Employer Committee, Inc. (JSEC)

Criteria

Preference will be given to students who are enrolled as Business Management Systems majors, but all students are eligible to receive the award.Preference will also be given to full-time students, though part-time students, non-traditional and non-matriculated students are also encouraged to apply.An applicant must be in good academic standing at the time hat his/her application is submitted for review.

Description

This scholarship was developed to assist naturalized citizens who have recently immigrated to the Mohawk Valley and have an interest in becoming a member of the local business community, either as an employee or a business operator.

Applicant must have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or better, a moderate need and a potential for leadership.

For student entering second year in a BIT major with an interest in the field of insurance.

In memory of Jack B. Riffle awarded to a second year business student in the financial services program.

Utica Plumbing Supply

Criteria

Applicants must be residents of Oneida County, have potential in their field and have moderate need.

Description

This fund awards members of the Heating and Air Conditioning Program.

W. Dennis Copeland Memorial

Criteria

Applicant must be a full-time student in either their first or second year.Financial need is given preference.

Description

This scholarship fund was established by Robert Copeland, Dennis's Brother, and his parents, Jane & Warren in memory of Dennis who passed away in 1980 from cancer.

William & Bonnie Waldron

Criteria

Must be in good standing and demonstrate the potential for degree completion and success in the field of Nursing.Preference will be given to students who would have difficulty continuing without support.

Established by alumna Bonnie Waldron, this award is given to a nursing student who has completed their first year in the Nursing Program.

William Keene Boley, Jr. Memorial

Criteria

Student must be a full-time second year student, a single parent, preferably a returning adult, with a moderate need and a 3.0 G.P.A.This student must demonstrate a proven track record of their ability to translate sound business theories and practices into application.

Women's Christian Association of Utica

Criteria

Preference is given to Oneida County residents.

This association annually supports a number of scholarships for female students, full-time or part-time, attending MVCC.
