Access for Individuals with Disabilities
The MVCC Libraries welcome students with disabilities and have provided a number of accommodations for their convenience.
The Utica Campus Library, located on the second floor of Payne Hall, is accessible by elevator. A wheelchair-adapted study carrel is provided in the reference area, and all computers are wheelchair-accessible. An accessible drinking fountain is located at the end of one corridor, and an accessible restroom is available on the first floor of the building. In case of fire, designated areas of refuge are marked.
The library is also equipped with a low-vision study room containing two machines to aid students with various vision problems. The Kurzweil Personal Reader Automatic Scanner reads scanned-in text to the student. It can read at various speeds, with different inflections, and in one of nine different voices. The Alladin Personal Reader projects printed material, enlarged, onto a monitor screen, so that the student can read text or read his/her own writing as he/she writes. Training and use of the equipment is free of charge. Once trained, approved users must check in at the Circulation or Information desks to obtain admittance to the locked room. The Rome Campus Library is also accessible by elevator. It includes a wheelchair-adapted study carrell and computers that are wheelchair-accessible. An accessible restroom is provided on the same floor as the library. For those with vision problems, the library is equipped with a V-Tek machine, which projects enlarged text onto a screen for easier reading. No training is required for its use. In case of emergency, a designated area of safety is marked.
