Principles of Assessment
Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) adopts the 9 Principles of Good Practice for Assessing Student Learning developed by the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE).
MVCC believes that assessment data should be shared appropriately for the purpose of improving programs and services to students and the overall effectiveness of the College; not for individual or collective evaluation.
In addition to the AAHE principles, MVCC recognizes the following principles in relation to assessment:
- The Vice President for Instruction is responsible for overseeing the assessment process. The initial planning, implementation, interpretations of results and subsequent follow-up actions dealing with assessment are determined in conjunction with the faculty and appropriate administrative staff.
- Students should be involved as partners in the assessment process and interpretation of the results.
- Student performance should be sampled in a variety of settings and through multiple modes.
- There are many valid approaches to assessment; the faculty in each program should identify or create appropriate assessment instruments.
- Individual departments/programs should be free to use their own assessment results to improve the program or department.
